Scheduling Happiness

By Jazzy Mitchell

Sequel takes place six months after You Matter (2019)

Chrissy Kramer sat on the couch, flipping through television channels as she waited for her fiancée, Reggie Esposito, to finish getting ready. Soon they would travel to Reggie’s mother’s house to spend Easter with Reggie's family. She heard indecipherable grumbling and muttered syllables floating through the air. Amused, Chrissy cocked her head as she lowered the television volume, hoping to catch Reggie’s words.

Reggie entered the living room while looking through her purse. “I don’t even know why we’re going. Lord knows she’ll comment on my clothes, my hair, my weight, and then she’ll proceed to make snarky comments on our not setting a wedding date yet. I bet it won’t take her five minutes to bring it up.”

“I’ll take your bet.” Chrissy leaned her head back to look at Reggie upside down. Reggie twisted her full lips as if she’d bitten into a lemon. Chrissy snickered.

Reggie slumped on the sofa arm with a huff. “It’s not like you have to worry. Mother adores you. And Ben.”

“What’s not to like?” Chrissy waggled her eyebrows.

Reggie drawled, “How insufferable you are for one thing.” She grabbed a pillow and threw it at Chrissy.

With a squawk, Chrissy caught it and lunged, securing Reggie in her arms and pulling her down onto the sofa. They ended up as a tangle of limbs with Reggie sprawled on her recumbent form. She rubbed her hands over Reggie’s back with long, soothing strokes. Reggie sighed, burrowing her face in the crook of Chrissy’s neck. They stayed that way for a few minutes, Chrissy stroking and Reggie steadying herself before they had to leave to visit her family.

Reggie turned her head to the side, lips tickling Chrissy’s neck as she murmured, “I just wish I could live my life free from her judgment.”

“We don’t have to go. I’m sure I can find a nice place for dinner.” Chrissy gazed into eyes shaded a deep umber. When she saw Reggie’s troubled countenance, she tightened her arms around her. She’d do anything to make Reggie happy. She didn’t care if they missed Easter dinner. While Chrissy loved seeing Reggie’s family, loved the chaotic energy of children running around and the chance to learn more about Reggie’s family history, Chrissy was content to spend the holiday with only Reggie and Chrissy’s son, Ben.

Reggie’s two older sisters, Tracy and Maria, would be at their mother’s house, as well as their husbands and children. All three sisters looked alike, although Reggie had more luscious curves. The women had dark hair, defined cheekbones, and full lips. As for their children, Tracy’s son, Ethan, played the violin with the Boston Philharmonic Youth Orchestra. His playing amazed her. Maria’s two girls, Diane and Stacey, danced. Chrissy could see they enjoyed themselves, but they didn’t dance with the passion Ethan displayed when he played his music.

Over the last couple of years, Chrissy attended several concerts. Ethan’s entire being lit up when he played the violin. It was
